In this painting the artist is showing the end of Mahisasur by Maa Durga. Durga was born to slay Mahisasur a combination of both an Asura and Mahisa(aurochi) with trident. When Maa Durga killed Mahisasur, then people on earth celebrated and announced this news by blowing bugle. This story is an important part of Shaktism which vernates the Goddess Durga. According to Hindu mythology Rambha, the king of Asuras was enticed with the beauty of a she-buffalo. Eventually he married her. Out of this bestiality union, was born a child which was half buffalo anf half human. Mahisasur to make himself invincible, he performed a tapas to Brahma and requested that he be granted immortality. Brahma refused him and instead gave him a boon such that no God or devil can defeat him and his death will happen only at the hands of a woman. Mahisasur considered himself immortal since he felt that it was impossible for a woman to stay a person of his strength. Thus with the belief, Mahisasur started troubling the Gods and started a war with the Devas and a battle took place. The Devas led by Indra were defeated and were dragged out of the heaven. The Devas requeted the trinity of Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu requesting help, then again all the Gods togather fought with Mahisasura but were again defeated .Finally all Gods combined their thejas and created a woman. The Goddess thus created was Durga and she eventually led a battle against Mahisasur and killed him. Thus fulfilling the prophecy that he would meet his death at the hands of a woman. The battle between Mahisasur and Durga continued till 9 days and Durga killed Mahisasur on 10th day. That is why Hindu devotees celebrate Durga puja’s festival for 10 days and 10th day is khown as Vijaya dashmi. Which is the symbol of Victory of good over bad.
